SAET Commissioner Jess Rogers speaks at IEU(SA) Equity Networking Event

The IEU(SA) Equity Committee held a networking event on Thursday 12 September at the Brompton Hotel.

Nearly 30 attendees (members and member guests) enjoyed the opportunity to network with fellow members working in the independent education sector, in a casual atmosphere, whilst enjoying some delicious finger food.

Guest speaker Jess Rogers shared with us:

  • Her experience as a young worker dealing with wage theft and how that, upon reflection, influenced her passion for workers’ rights.
  • A number of steep learning curves and firsts throughout her years working in a range of roles at the Communications, Electrical, Energy and Plumbing Union.
  • Challenges, successes and benefits of engaging women in her union which covered a male dominated industry.
  • Her achievements as an Industrial Officer working with members to address wage theft as a business model.
  • What her role includes as a recently appointed Commissioner in the South Australian Employment Tribunal (SAET).

Jess provided us with both inspiration and insight into how we as members and Reps can make change working with our union.
