Catholic Enterprise Consultative Committee Meeting

Did you know that just as each school Consultative Committee is required to meet once a term so too is the Catholic Enterprise Consultative Committee (ECC)? This central committee comprised of representatives from both the Employer and the Union. During the life of an Enterprise Agreement it is charged with:

  • Facilitating consultation on industrial and professional issues of significance
  • Enabling dialogue regarding issues arising from this Agreement and to discuss issues which might be considered for inclusion in subsequent Agreements and
  • Providing a forum to discuss wider Human Resource issues applying or being considered for application in Catholic Schools.

Given a new Enterprise Agreement has been approved and is now operational, the ECC held its first meeting on Friday 11 May.

Union representatives include Pat Allman (teacher St Aloysius), Helen Williams (teacher St Martins), Jon Shriver (ESO St Columba), Brian Horan (teacher St Francis de Sales) & Frank Bernardi (Industrial Officer IEU).

At this first meeting, apart from dealing with procedural matters related to how the Committee will operate, the parties also proposed to discuss matters which may have implications for the content of future Enterprise Agreements. Employer representatives, for example, directed the group’s attention to the recent Gonski review, Through Growth to Achievement.

The IEU also raised specific implementation issues related to

  • Staff being directed to attend parent teacher interviews on days they do not work as recently experienced at St Paul’s College. Whilst the school changed its position following representation by the IEU, we sought clarification that our understandings of clause 27.10 were consistent. The employer representatives agreed with our interpretation – part time staff cannot be directed to attend school related activities on days, or part days, they do not work unless agreed by negotiation.
  • The transfer of Yr 7 to Secondary schools and the understanding principal consultants / principals had related to job security of staff, and in particular that the Adelaide Diocese staff are employed by the CCES and not the individual school.
  • Procedures for Dealing with Allegations of Misconduct and recommending how to improve the procedural fairness.

Summaries of future meetings will be made available to you through In Brief as they occur.
