Catholic Matters Update: Attendance at CESA event, Live Learn Lead: Together

Did you know some schools have commenced preparation for the 2019 school year by sending ‘invitations’ to staff to attend the CESA event, Live Learn Lead: Together, from 9 am to 4 pm on Wednesday 23 January 2019 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

It is expected all principals will make similar announcements to their staff during the course of this term.

Consequently the IEU has already begun fielding questions about how the Enterprise Agreement deals with such an event.

There is no simple answer because workload (including professional development) and remuneration are treated differently for teachers and ESOs. Other factors will also further complicate the answer – for example if you work in a metropolitan school or country school.

That said three basic facts must be established before indicative answers can start to be considered.

These are, who is being ‘invited’ to attend, is it compulsory to attend and how is the work to be categorised?

If these points are not clear ask your principal to clarify them as a matter of priority.

Once this is known, if you have been directed to attend, you should expect the school to have considered the following questions and communicated the answers to you before attendance occurs.

  1. Does attendance fit within the employee’s normal work routines – that is work day/s and hours?
  2. Does travel time to the event need to be factored into remuneration?

Remember, this is a start point.

The IEU, on behalf of members, has sought more information about the event. Once answers are received the IEU will update this circular with more specific information.
