Education Support Staff Week – 16 – 22 May 2020

This week we are celebrating Education Support Staff. You can download, print and display our A3 poster around your school to show your support staff that you care and appreciate them. Too often, they are the unsung heroes of your school.

Two of our IEU(SA) Executive are Education Support Staff – Sue Bailey (Personal Assistant to Director of Learning Support – Tyndale Christian School) and Sheryl Hoffmann (Science Laboratory Manager – Concordia College). We asked Sue and Sheryl for their assistance to guide us as we honour all Education Support Staff. You can read Sue and Sheryl’s short bios below.

My role at Tyndale has changed over the 20 years I have been at the school. When I joined Tyndale, I was the only Learning Support ESO in the school, we now have 29 in this role. In 2011, my role changed to Personal Assistant to Director of Learning Support.

Both roles have their challenges but are also rewarding. We have a great Learning Support Team here which definitely helps. I have always been passionate about justice, which is outworked in several ways.

I love working with children with special needs, something I have done for over 40 years. It is wonderful to do my part in helping them reach their full potential.

I have been the IEU rep at Tyndale for eleven years and joined the Exec six years ago. I also represented the IEU (SA) on the Ministerial Advisory Committee: Children and Students with Disabilities for six years.

I have been an IEU member since 2006, Rep since 2009 and joined the IEU(SA) Executive in 2017.

I’m the Science Laboratory Manager at Concordia College, starting here back in 1993.

I help teachers and students get the best out of their practical work and make sure the laboratories are safe places to work.

I’ve seen many changes, the school doubling in size, many new buildings and three re-classifications of my role. Initially there were only a handful of LSO’s (Lutheran School Officers) but now there is nearly 100 and that is just in the senior school.

My interests lie in health and safety and equity – both for LSO’s but also gender and disability equity. I’ve also been a negotiator for many Lutheran Enterprise Agreements and on the committee that reviewed the LSO’s classification system, extending both the range of jobs included and the grades.

I’ve been an IEU member since 1992, Rep since 1999 and joined the IEU(SA) Executive in 2000.

Thank you to all education support staff…
