Healthcare that works around the school day

When popping out for a medical appointment isn’t possible, it’s good to have other go-to options.

Our friends at Teachers Health have provided four time-saving tips to take care of yourself.

  1. Telehealth GP appointments

Many GPs offer telehealth (phone or video) consultations, making it easier to fit appointments into a busy school day.

What’s more, Medicare helps cover the cost of telehealth appointments if you already have a relationship with your GP and have visited their practice for an in-person consultation within the past 12 months.

Some conditions and exemptions apply, so it’s worth checking the details on Services Australia.

Regular GP not available? My Telehealth Clinic could save the day! It provides 10-minute consults for prescriptions and referrals, and medical certificates at a competitive price. The service operates 7am – 9pm, 7 days a week*.

  1. Online specialist consultations

Many specialists offer telehealth appointments too; a handy option that can save you money on transport or eyewatering hospital parking fees.

To discover whether your specialist provides this service, check their website or use Healthdirect’s Service Finder tool. Simply filter by ‘appointment type’ and select ‘phone or online service’ to see if your doctor is on the list.

Please note that sometimes face-to-face care is the only safe and clinically appropriate option. Always follow a qualified healthcare provider’s advice on what’s right for you.

  1. e-Scripts to your device

Electronic prescriptions (eScripts) can also be a real timesaver. They’re sent via SMS or email and include a digital token that your pharmacist uses to dispense your medication.

If your pharmacy has a mobile app, you may be able to send your token ahead of time and collect your meds when it suits you.

If you take multiple medications regularly, an Active Script List (ASL) might also be helpful. It’s a digital list that keeps all your eScripts in one place. Your pharmacist can help you get set up.

  1. Mental health support, made easy

With Teachers Health Extras cover, you may be able to access support for your mental health, including claiming towards the cost of some online programs, psychology and/or counselling.

You can’t always control your workload. But thanks to the wider availability of services that make looking after yourself a little easier, you can choose healthcare that works around it.
