IEU Certificate of Middle Leadership is well underway

IEU(SA), in conjunction with IEU (VicTas) and Teachers Learning Network identified the need for a Middle Leadership Program that could be conducted as a defined course, not just ‘unlinked’ short professional learning sessions.

A key reason for starting the certificate was to ensure that members understood they can continue to stay on as a member of the IEU even in a leadership position that moves their contract/conditions outside of a school Enterprise Agreement.

If members stop and think about that, it is very important to have independent support outside of their school if they need contract or other assistance arising from their middle leadership role.

IEU(SA) Middle School Leader members were invited to apply for a place in the IEU Certificate of Middle Leadership, an 18-month program starting with six sessions in 2024, varying in length from 1-3 hours.

7 IEU(SA) members from 5 different schools accepted the invitation and started the certificate on Wednesday 19 June.

The topics for the 2024 courses include:

  • Introduction to the course
  • Managing challenging conversations
  • Research findings of middle leadership practices
  • Leading a successful team (Live and in person)
  • Supporting teachers’ work
  • Review and reflection

On Friday 6 September, from 9am to 3pm, all 7 participating members attended the live session ‘Leading a Successful Team’ presented by Kirsty Elliot, which was live streamed into the IEU(SA) Boardroom (pictured above) from Melbourne. Members of IEU(VicTas) undertook the session face-to-face with Kirsty.

Having all 7 members in the same space enabled them to undertake group discussions and breakout projects. Importantly, it also enabled the members who didn’t know each other to network over morning tea and lunch, provided by the IEU, and to meet some of the IEU(SA) team in the office at 213 Currie Street.

All those that attended agreed the session was very informative and we will endeavour to ask members for feedback in their own words, which will inform our membership of the value of this certificate.

The IEU always looks to provide member benefits that ensure value. The IEU covered the $750 cost for each member attending this course, and for many members, this added value offsets a significant amount of their union fee subscription per year.

Whilst this middle leadership program is closed to new participants, members can undertake our other free online learning sessions here: https://ieusa.org.au/get-involved/professional-learning-training-education
