IEU(SA) Rep Training Term 1, 2025 continues
At time of publication of this edition of Class Action, Sub-Branch Representatives (Reps) from a range of schools are undertaking the last Reps’ training session for Term 1, 2025.
Our new programme of Sub-Branch Rep training includes (but is not limited to):
- Roles, rights and responsibilities of IEU Sub-Branch Reps
- Union conversations – skill based
- Building an organised union workplace
Training enables our Sub-Branch Reps to expand their knowledge and skill-base led by our experienced Organisers through active practice and discussion. The training also provides a valuable opportunity to spend time sharing and networking with Reps from other worksites, both within and across sectors.
What do Reps think of the training?
We ask all attendees, here is some of their feedback … eg. “What did you gain most from/enjoy about the training?”
- “Lots of important information”
- “I appreciated understanding my legal rights and also appreciated hearing from other school reps”
Sub-Branch Reps are a vital connection between members and their unions. They are the ‘first port of call’ for members and the key to building union in our schools, ELC’s and training providers.
As such, we believe it is vital that Reps are provided with the skills, knowledge and support to undertake their role. Attending Rep training is the starting point.
Women-specific Rep training
On the eve of International Working Women’s Day, a group of our Women Sub-Branch Reps gathered for their day of Rep training.
The day began at 7 am over shared breakfast whilst viewing the livestream of the Adelaide IWD Breakfast.
We were inspired by Keynote Speaker Rachel Perkins, a proud Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman, and one of Australia’s most significant storytellers as a writer, director and producer. Rachel shared the story and strength of her own mother, who supported and enabled her father Charlie Perkins to undertake the important work he led in the Aboriginal rights movement.
Feedback from the Women’s Rep training day – What did you gain most from/enjoy about the training?
- “Connecting with other staff and realising we are all dealing with very similar issues”
- “Connecting union values to challenging conversations about membership”
- “Meeting other union staff as well as learning skills to help me with growing and retaining my Sub-Branch”
- “Talking to other Reps and the correct processes of a Rep if there is an incident”
- “I appreciated understanding my legal rights and also appreciated hearing from other school reps”
- “Vital info to pass on to members plus strategies to increase membership in my school”
A long but fruitful day was had with our Reps sharing with, and learning from, each other.
If you missed the opportunity to attend Rep training in Term 1, look out for Term 2 opportunities which will be advertised soon.
