Do you know what the IEU can do for you?
Our aim is simple. The IEU is all about better jobs which brings about better schools, which builds better societies.
The complicated part comes in the how.
Last year the IEU attended non-government schools no less than 457 times in both metropolitan and country areas.
We negotiated, on behalf of members, 12 Enterprise Agreements. As a part of this process we have voiced member’s concerns at the table and influenced and resisted employer positions, to deliver improved conditions for staff in schools.
We have provided assistance and representation on over 30 workers compensation (Return to Work) claims. While many of these members have returned to work at pre-injury capacity or with modified duties some claims have been more complex. Where required we have lodged disputes on behalf of members and provided representation at the South Australian Employment Tribunal.
Our other biggest area of work involves representing members in both individual and Branch issues. Last year we represented 25 members with disputes involving Contract of Employment and or underpayment of wages claims. We also provided advocacy, advice and representation in 11 Unfair Dismissal cases. These related to allegations of misconduct and or breaches of Code of Conduct and Protective Practices including parent/student and employer complaints.
The IEU ensures compliance with EAs and follows up breaches – Last year this included:
- ensuring the correct number of students in an Early Learning Centre;
- reminding 6 individual employers and 1 system of their obligations under their enterprise agreement to observe the clause regarding arrival and departure times; and
- disputing the accrual of annual leave and corrected the manner in which a school had calculated the entitlement.
