May Day, or International Workers’ Day, has been a Global Day of Protest, solidarity, and celebration of workers’ rights since 1886, and the voluntary group May Day Collective, in conjunctions with SA Unions, organise events to bring together unionists, activists, and families to celebrate our collective strength and advocate for a fairer future.

Workers Memorial Day

On Tuesday April 28, IEU(SA) Branch Secretary Tim Oosterbaan, and Anna Stewart Memorial Project participants Lezelle and Stefanie (pictured below)—along with workers, families, SA Unions and other unions—gathered at the Deceased Workers Memorial Forest to remember workers who have lost their lives at work. Unions will always fight for safer workplaces.

May Day Dinner

Friday May 1 was the May Day Dinner and that is a chance for unionists and community members to come together to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the challenges and victories to come.

Our IEU Rep at St Peter’s Girls School Sub-Branch, Kyle Martelle, was shortlisted for the ‘Trailblazer’ Award, which recognises rank-and-file unionists who have never been employed by a union but have been instrumental in their workplace.

May Day March

The May Day March and Family Fun Day was held on Saturday May 2, marching from Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga to the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden (diagonally opposite Elder Park).

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus was a key speaker at both the dinner and the march.
