Rep training already building worksite membership and participation

Members will be aware that IEU(SA) Sub-Branch Representative (Rep) training commenced during 2025 and is continuing this year.
So far this year, almost 20 Reps have engaged in either Level 1 or Level 2 Rep Training
Level 1 Training included:
- Information, tips and skill development to assist Reps in their role.
- A basic introduction to WHS
- Sharing strategies and networking with Reps from other independent schools.
Level 2 sessions built on the skills, information and strategies explored at Level 1; and focused on:
- Supporting members in meetings with the employer/leadership.
- Enterprise Bargaining.
Provision of training and supporting our Reps in their worksites is growing our union.
Recent new member joins are a direct indication that trained Reps are more knowledgeable and confident in organising their worksite and running their IEU(SA) Sub-Branch — which is driving new member joins.
Where there is bargaining occurring in a worksite, Reps have also been active in organising members to take collective action to win better conditions and salaries.
An excellent demonstration of this is the St Peter’s Girls School IEU(SA) Sub-Branch.
“The SPGS EB negotiation brought the staff together and helped to reinforce that we are stronger together when asking for better work conditions and pay. It also helped us to consider the needs of all staff and develop a greater appreciation for the range of issues that impact different roles within the school staff.”

Several Catholic worksites are collectively organising members and colleagues for action, if and when required, should the current matters in bargaining remain unresolvable.

Reps play a crucial role in connecting members with their union — a starting point in accessing information and advice as well as supporting members to be involved in union activity. There is no limit to the number of Reps you can have in your worksite, members will determine that. We encourage a small team of Reps to share the load and work together. The IEU provides free training and works with you to take leave using approved ‘Delegate Training Rights’.
