Workload – What are you required to do and how much?

Workload issues are endemic. Teachers’ work is often poorly codified, but Support Staff can monitor their workload according to their role and their classification with the use of a Time Book.

Teacher workload

Teacher workload may be defined in your school/system EA or in a specific School Policy document.

If you don’t know your workload or don’t understand how to calculate your workload, contact our office on 8410 0122, and your IEU(SA) School Organiser can assist you.

In the Catholic System,  teacher workload is codified in the EA and the IEU has developed a free workload calculator for you. You can find the EA and the calculator in your member login area of the IEU website: http://ieusa.org.au/members/login/
Ask the IEU Organiser for your school if you need assistance.

In the Lutheran System, teacher workload is codified in the EA and is supplemented by a local workload agreement voted up at each school. You can find the EA in your member login area of the IEU website: http://ieusa.org.au/members/login/
Ask the IEU Organiser for your school if you need assistance.

Independent Schools do not have a common workload agreement like the Catholic and Lutheran systems, but the majority do have their own school EA.  However, your Independent School EAs may not have teacher workload codified in much detail. You can check if your school has an EA in your member login area of the IEU website: http://ieusa.org.au/members/login/ – it will be listed at the bottom of the welcome screen.

Ask the IEU Organiser for your school if you need assistance with understanding existing requirements or negotiating improved conditions in your next EA – 8410 0122.

Support Staff workload

Support Staff workload is based on the hours worked and the duties required.

A Time Book of some form will record the ordinary hours being worked but any overtime needs to be pre-approved by the employer (in writing) and noted in your Time Book.

The EA will generally have a detailed description of the duties required at the various classification levels. If your agreed duty statement and the duties being performed do not align with the EA classification, then it is time for a role review and a possible reclassification.

Comparative EAs

To review what is included in a benchmark school EA, you can view the Catholic and Lutheran EAs in the IEU(SA) Website member area: click here to log in. (both EAs are currently in collective bargaining mode so these EAs will be superseded in due course).

The role of the IEU is to support members in their workplace so that they understand their rights and obligations. If you aren’t sure about something – talk with us. We are here to help you – 8410 0122.
