Free Professional Learning supports your career

Free Professional Learning (PL) is an important career benefit offered by IEU(SA) for all members – teachers, support staff and leadership — in conjunction with our Online Learning partner Teachers Learning Network (TLN).

What is (Online) Professional Learning?

The Teachers Registration Board of South Australia (TRBSA) define professional learning as any planned or unplanned learning opportunities, processes, or experiences in which a teacher engages either in their work time or own time.

They note professional learning as:

  • continually builds capacity as a professional to positively impact child and student growth
  • furthers professional growth based on the needs and relevance of individuals
  • supports the learning outcomes of children and students now and into the future
  • aligns to site and/or system priorities.

TRBSA also note that registered teachers who have not completed a minimum 100 hours of professional learning within a 5-year period may not be permitted to renew their registration.

IEU(SA)’s online PL is for all education staff – not just teachers

Through surveys, we know that education support staff and leaders pursue online PL to ensure their knowledge is enhanced and up-to-date. Our PL changes year-to-year but it typically covers a range of topics such as: student behavior management, work practices and job skills, application writing, colleague interactions and even classroom programs (eg. literacy).

Why should you look to include our online learning in your PL?

Apart from it being free, our online PL is presented through live sessions, and ‘on demand’ recordings of the live sessions. The recorded sessions are available on demand 24/7 through our Online Learning Centre. Our online PL course information also note the AITSL standards that may be applied for each PL session.

Who is TLN and why is their PL appropriate?

IEU(SA) has had a long association with TLN and their online learning sessions. They note:

“Online learning is simply learning in an environment where you are connected to other learners online. The TLN have a decade of experience delivering high quality professional development in virtual learning environments.

Just as there is no single way to teach a lesson in person, the TLN has developed multiple formats to ensure that participants can engage with the content, presenters and other participants in the most effective way possible.

Courses range from Q&A sessions, to lectures, to workshop discussions and there is a variety of ‘On Demand’ content accessible at any time you can login to the internet.

When running live courses the TLN has pioneered processes to ensure a smooth experience, which includes providing a presentation from a content expert, a host to manage the online learning space and technical support available throughout every live session. The provision of these resources and processes means that your focus will be on the content of the session rather than the mechanics of running the session.”

You can access our on demand courses over the summer break

All recorded sessions are available online. Find out more about our online PL by accessing your Online Learning Centre portal. You can read how to do this via our website: https://ieusa.org.au/online-professional-learning-for-ieusa-members

The 2024 online PL sessions will be forwarded to all members by email in Term 1 of 2024.
