IEU(SA) Equity Committee – Women’s Dinner

The first IEU(SA) Equity Committee Women’s Dinner was held 11 years ago, in the year of the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, when our speaker was the then member for Florey in State Parliament—Frances Bedford. At that dinner, Frances talked about her work to promote our own suffragist, actress and teacher Muriel Matters. The dinner was a great success.

I am pleased to report that in keeping with tradition, this year’s dinner was also a great success.

Held at ‘Spaarke at the Whitmore Hotel’ on Wednesday 21 September, a crowd of approximately 30 members, non-members, industry associates and fellow unionists enjoyed dinner, speakers and an excellent networking opportunity.

Our keynote speaker was Michele O’Neil, current ACTU President. Michele gave an inspiring recount of her journey from waitress to union organiser, Branch and National Secretary with the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia, and now to her current role. Michele also talked about the challenges of attending the Jobs and Skills Summit recently held in Canberra, and the opportunity to have input on a range of workforce initiatives resulting from the change of the Federal Government in May 2022.

It was also a pleasure to welcome our newly elected Federal IEU Secretary, Christine Cooper, joining us for the dinner.

IEU networking (and professional learning) events are a great way to meet other members. Be sure to join us when new events are advertised through Class Action.
