Self-care, member anxiety courses

As we return to ‘normal’ – is stress normal?

The IEUA NSW/ACT Branch has worked with psychologist Helen Tsamoulous to create courses specifically designed for members to assist students as they return to ‘normal’.

IEU member teachers and support staff from around Australia are all welcome register for these courses – they are all free. A link will be sent to you nearer to the start of each course and you will need a reliable Internet connection and speakers to listen to the course.

Managing anxiety during challenging times assisting infants school children navigating their way around COVID-19

FREE online course – Wednesday 27 May, 5.30 – 7.30pm (SA Time)

Over the past six months, Australian students have been affected by drought, bushfires, floods and now a pandemic. Staff have also been significantly affected by these events.
The IEUA NSW/ACT Branch has worked with psychologist Helen Tsamoulous to create a course specifically designed for teachers working with students in early Stage 1 and Stage 2.

This course will cover:
• understanding how anxiety presents in K-2 students
• the ‘thinking-feeling-behaviour’ cycle and recognising and then assisting students with managing unhelpful thoughts
• discussing facts about COVID-19 in a child friendly way by visualising and verbalising an using cartoons
• strength based activities to encourage coping and resilience
• the changing face of Stage 1 education in uncertain times and helping parents help children
• talking about balance, consistency and structure
• reflecting on positive growth experiences
• self care for teachers and support staff during times of stress and adjustment

Helping students manage uncertainty and adjustments relating to COVID-19

FREE online course – Tuesday 2 June, 5.30 – 7.30pm (SA Time)

In the past months, teachers and support staff have been affected by drought, bushfires, floods and now a pandemic.
The IEUA NSW/ACT Branch has worked with psychologist Helen Tsamoulous to create a course specifically designed for teachers working with students in Stages 2 and 3.

This course will cover:

  • internalising vs externalising – understanding how anxiety presents in Year 3 to Year 6 students
  • identifying and reframing unhelpful thoughts
  • discussing facts about COVID-19 and drawing links to overcoming other challenges
  • strength based activities to encourage coping and resilience
  • teaching motivation, goal setting and independent learning strategies
  • optimising adaptive behaviour strategies
  • talking about balance, consistency and structure
  • reflecting on positive growth experiences
  • self care for teachers and support staff during times of stress and adjustment.

Teenagers coping with anxiety around COVID-19

FREE online course – Tuesday 9 June, 5.30 – 7.30pm (SA Time)

The IEUA NSW/ACT Branch has worked with psychologist Helen Tsamoulous to create a course specifically designed for teachers working with students in Stages 4 to 6.

This course will cover:
• anxiety and depression, how they’re linked and signs to watch
• discussing COVID-19 with teenagers
• strategies and activities to encourage coping and resilience
• the role of responsibility and ownership of the learning journey and a focus on self direction
• reflecting on challenges and implementing a growth mindset
• self care for teachers and support staff during times of stress and adjustment.
