World Teacher’s Day – did you know?

Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers is the theme for 2017 World TeachersDay which is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world each year on October 5 and in Australia on the last Friday in October.

On October 5 1966 a special intergovernmental conference adopted the UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. For the first time, this recommendation gave teachers throughout the world an instrument that defines their responsibilities and asserts their rights. In adopting this recommendation, governments unanimously recognised the importance for society to have competent, qualified and motivated teachers.

Unnecessary paperwork and over testing of students has made it difficult for teachers to do what they do best. Teach.

The IEU is running a social media campaign to highlight this issue on World Teachers’ Day held on 27 October. To do this, we are using a web app called Thunderclap and it will let us push out a single message across the internet using our collective social reach. Donate a Tweet or a Facebook post (or both) by clicking the link below.

In the light of political discussion about the quality and role of teachers, it is imperative that as the organisation which works tirelessly for the industrial and professional needs of its members, we take this opportunity to acknowledge and publicly state our admiration and appreciation for the work that teachers do in non-government schools across the state.

In the words of Confucius

“The Master said, “A true teacher is one who, keeping the past alive, is also able to understand the present.”
(Analects 2.11)”
